Håkan got sober – after years of addiction

“I planned my life so I could drink undisturbed”

Summary of article from Hemmets Journal Magazine

Camilla and Håkan have been together their whole lives, with a house, children and jobs. But behind the facade, Camilla was tested by Håkan’s escalating alcohol abuse. Eventually, it couldn’t last any longer and Håkan realized he was hurting his family – then the turnaround could begin.

Håkan struggled for many years with alcohol abuse that gradually took over his life – from first drinking on weekends to drinking daily and keeping the problem a secret from his family. Finally, he realized that his drinking was harming both himself and his loved ones. After treatment at a treatment center and through structured support at home, with the Previct app and the Previct breathalyzer, he was able to do his tests digitally, he managed to stay sober and also show those around him that he was sober. Over time, trust was rebuilt in the family and today the family lives a more united and present family life together.

Some lessons from Håkan’s journey

1. Insight is the first step
Admitting to himself that his drinking was a problem was crucial to the change. The turnaround began when Håkan realized that alcohol was damaging his family and relationships.

2. Structure and support really help
Treatment in a treatment center provided a controlled starting point away from the temptations of everyday life. The support of family and employer, who paid for the treatment, was also important.

3. Clear routines build sobriety
Using concrete tools – in Håkan’s case the Previct app with alcohol tests performed several times a day – helped him stay focused, create a routine and provide security for his family.

4. Trust takes time to rebuild
After addiction, it takes time and action to regain your family’s trust. Håkan did this by being consistently sober, talking more with his family, and participating in aftercare.

5. The role of family is central
Håkan’s wife and children were crucial for his motivation and support during his recovery. Involving the family in the process – for example, through shared rituals such as using the breathalyzer with his daughter – strengthened the relationships.
